It should come as a surprise to no one that companions from the Doctor Who reboot (2005 to present) took the highest places in our poll, because the earlier Who iterations are no longer being regularly broadcast. It seems the original series has been relegated to the purview of  die hard Who enthusiasts and pre-Eccleston purists. (As hard as it may be to believe, I know at least two people personally for whom there never will be a Doctor after Tom Baker.  Baker was the Doctor of my childhood - mostly due to a ten-year lag that used to exist between shows airing on the BBC and the same shows entering the US airwaves - so I have a great sympathy for them. However, they've missed some great stuff, especially lately.)

I urge all of you new Who enthusiasts to check out the old show on Netflix. Yes, sometimes the sets wobble and the Daleks are thwarted by stairs, but the show transcended its trappings. If it had not, there would not have been a reboot. Pinky swear.

Now that I've had nearly a month to heal the blow to my heart that was The End of Time, and it is time to face up to the end of Ten as well as the end of our  Who Companion poll. *sniffle* Thanks to all who voted!

Here's the final tally:

1. Donna Noble with 141 votes representing  23.5% of the vote

2. Dr. Martha Jones with 117 votes representing 19.5% of the vote

3. Rose Tyler  with 116 votes representing 19.3% of the vote

4. Barbara Wright with 87 votes representing 14.5% of the vote

5.  Ace with 40 votes representing 6.7% of the vote

6. Sarah Jane Smith with 25 votes representing 4.2% of the vote

7. Romana tied with Nyssa of Traken with 22 votes representing 3.7% of the vote

8.  Peri with 16 votes representing 2.7% of the vote

9. Leela of the Sevateem with 10 votes or 1.7% of the vote

10. Zoe Heriot with five votes or 0.8% of the vote

Ok, I'm fine with Donna winning. It's Martha beating Rose that kills me!

Really? It's Martha beating Rose by only 1 point that kills me...

(Oh yes. I went there. smilies/wink.gif smilies/cheesy.gif )

No, seriously. Barbara, I thought, actually did pretty shockingly well for a companion from 50 years ago. I noticed there was a strong pro-Babs push right after the poll got linked on Who Daily.

Well, I am a Martha fan - especially for the way she left him. I love Rose, but I am partial to Dr. Jones.

Nightsky - You're absolutely right about Barbara! Her showing was impressive, and we did have a push after the link on Who Daily. I'm not terribly familiar with her (I need to take my own darned advice and catch up on the older Who) so I didn't go into it, but her placing such a strong fourth is worth noting.

Me... well, I admit to a special fondness for Donna that I can neither explain nor justify. It may be as simple as the fact that she was the first of the new Who companions to harbor no latent attraction for the Doctor. It could be that she made me laugh.

Martha's story arc was certainly the most satisfying of the three. *sigh*
